Profit lives on a statement. Cash lives in your bank!
Profit lives on a statement. Cash lives in your bank account — and only one of them pays the bills.
Here's the fix I use with founders: Build a cash burn by decision map.
Not a generic budget. A decision map that shows which initiatives create runway and which consume it.
Picture this: Hiring. Marketing spend. New software. Inventory buys.
Each one gets a simple line in the map:
—Cash out timing (by week)
—Cash in timing (by week)
—Runway impact (how many weeks it buys or breaks)
Real-world example I see often:
A team adds headcount to chase growth. Collections are still 60 days. Payroll hits in week 2. Revenue arrives later. The decision map makes that timing gap visible before it becomes a crisis.
Takeaway:
Profit is an accounting concept. Cash is what keeps the lights on. If you cannot trace decisions to weekly cash impact, you are guessing.
